Nine months after the members of Carry Me Ohio first played together,
they were in a studio recording their first album. On Oct. 22, 2010,
their self-produced debut album Oak and Iron Bound was released. It was
recorded at Altitude Studios on Sugarloaf Mountain outside of Boulder,
Colorado over a four day period.
The members of Carry Me Ohio
currently reside all over Northern Colorado, but only one of them is
actually native to the state. The rest of the band found their way out
West. Although their musical backgrounds are varied, they all have a
common thread in their love of music.
Carry Me Ohio’s music can
best be described as a form of Americana, with sounds that are merged
from folk, country, rhythm & blues, rock & roll, as well as
classical music. Their sound grew organically when the diverse
influences of its members came together to create something unique.
Carry Me Ohio consists of Evan Pugh (vocals, backing guitar), David Goodheim (lead guitar, lap steel), Jeff Miller (bass guitar, backing vocals),and Dan Nadler (drums).
A
recent review of their new album in M Music & Musicians magazine
said "the emphasis on Oak and Iron Bound remains on songcraft rather
than showy musical fireworks. That said, this is a real band."
________
Evan Pugh (rhythm guitars and vocals) started Carry Me Ohio
as an outlet to play his original songs with a full band. Originally
from Unionville, PA, he got his start playing music at legendary venue
"The Point" in Philadelphia, PA. When asked what he does during his
day, Evan replies, “I’m a snow hydrologist. I’m looking at the impacts
of mountain pine beetle-induced tree death on snow accumulation and
melt timing.” Some of his love for snow comes across in songs like "Avalanche" and "Tree Line". However, many lyrics resound more broadly, with themes of love and nights out on the town.
Jeff Miller (bass and vocals) was the next to join. He is from Detroit, MI, joined the band via Craigslist,
and currently works as a shipping and receiving manager for an
internationally known toy company. Jeff learned to play the bass after
originally starting out on the guitar because he was “the funkiest.”
Other words that describe Jeff? Friendly, insane, loving, and crazy.
David Goodheim (lap steel and lead guitar)
is originally from Boulder, CO, and is a performer and composer of
music, as well as a teacher. He has been playing and studying guitar in
various styles for 13 years and is also equally impassioned about Hindustani classical music
which he has studied for six years. David really is not your typical
lead guitarist, saying “I am constantly battling the notion of what a
guitarist is/should be, especially in rock and roll. I try to play
guitar with the ears of a musician, not a guitarist.” Although his
attitude is quite low-key, we are currently encouraging him to bring
out his inner rock-star with the use of hair product.
Dan Nadler (drums) originally hails from Wellesley, MA, near Boston. During the day, Dan functions as a undergraduate at the University of Colorado,
as well as a research assistant in a Behavioral Neuroscience lab. He
primarily remains the percussion element in Carry Me Ohio, as his songs
about lab rats have been nixed by other members as being too
un-relatable. First learning to play drums
at the age of 10, Dan still harbors resentment for the kids who got to
learn how to play the recorder in grade school. Whatever his issues, we
are glad to have Dan with us.
Carry Me Ohio's
music is evolving continuously, and will surely make an impact on
anyone within earshot. Evan, Jeff, David, and Dan look forward
to a long career together.
